| Wireless Microphones in Classrooms | ||
| The MARRS study (http://www.marrs-study.info/). This is the original landmark study that first addressed the use of wireless microphones in classrooms. While the original intent was to verify that a hearing impaired student could be “mainstreamed” into an inclusive classroom with this technology (and not have to be set aside in a separate classroom with specialists) this study found that the technology actually helped all students. | A research paper from Deborah Brace, audiologist for Egg Harbor School District, Egg Harbor, New Jersey. While dated a couple years, it gives a good summary of the problem and what can be done. What is very interesting to note is the correlation between minor hearing loss and student performance: “ Of the children with mild hearing loss studied, 37% had repeated at least one grade, as compared to 3% of their normal hearing peers and obtained markedly lower scores on academic achievement subtests”. The study Ms. Brace references also stated how a good percentage of students have mild hearing loss that goes undetected for some time. | Download PDF | |
